Soba Boro are traditional Japanese cookies that are made from buckwheat and have a hard, biscotti-like texture. They are a historic confection that’s very famous and local to the city of Kyoto.
Kawamichiya, a shop with over 300 years of history in Kyoto, based their Soba Boro recipe off of Soba noodles made with 100% buckwheat flour. They decided that taking their family-secret soba noodle recipe and turning it into a confection would be a great idea, and they were not wrong.
Usually, Soba Boro cookies contain a half-and-half mixture of buckwheat and wheat flours, but these particular cookies use a higher ratio of buckwheat flour, so you can enjoy the aroma and nuttiness of buckwheat. They also come in cute plum blossom and round shapes.

We had friends bring box or 2 over for us whenever they come to visit us here in US. Finding these cookies on line was exciting. Now we just have them in our pantry ALL the time.

These cookies are really nice. They have a great crunch, somewhat strong grainy flavor, and a nice mild sweetness. They finish with a nutty aftertaste. Perfect to pair with some tea or coffee. Somewhat reminiscent of Italian biscotti, but with a better texture in my opinion.
The box they come in is fairly fancy, wrapped in paper and with multiple layers of packing to keep the cookies safe. These would be perfectly giftable.
Slightly overpriced given the amount of cookies received but all in all I'm very happy with these!

I bought a small bag of these on another site. My mind went back to my apartment in Kyoto in 1992 where I could walk to a very small business and buy these fresh. They represent plum blossoms. I ate the first box of soba boro as soon as it arrived from Japanese Taste. I NEVER eat sweets that fast.
