Hi-Chew was originally created by Morinaga founder Taichiro Morinaga who originally sought to create a gum-like candy that could be swallowed. His first attempt in 1931 was a chewy caramel called "Chewlets". After years of refining the recipe, Chewlets were rebranded as Hi-Chew in 1975, offering a culturally perfect, chewable treat for Japan.
