Nobel Neriri Ume Neri Umeboshi Paste Candy (Pack of 10)

$18.99

Nobel Neriri Ume Neri is a Japanese candy that is made from umeboshi (pickled plum) flesh. According to the manufacturer, the flesh is kneaded into dough, gets solidified, and is then cut into bite-sized pieces.

Ume Neri is actually a concentrated form of umeboshi: the more you chew it, the more the flavor of plum spreads in your mouth. In terms of texture, its outside is tough while the inside is soft.

This chewy snack is ideal for combating sudden cravings without excessive calorie intake because of the low calories (54kcal per bag) even when you eat a whole bag of candies.

Like real umeboshi, this snack is seasoned with umesu (umeboshi vinegar) and shiso (perilla, also known as Japanese basil).

    Not for me

I am a white guy who loves Japanese food, and I usually "get" even flavors that are really out-there for the Caucasian palate, such as natto. But this "candy" has found my limit and exceeded it by a huge margin. I don't even remotely understand why you'd want to put this stuff in your mouth. I regularly enjoy umeboshi and was expecting a nice hit of plum flavor. Instead what I got was a chewy salt bomb exploding in my mouth. I don't recall tasting anything remotely this salty before; and on reading the nutrition information I understand why: 3200mg of salt per 20g serving of this product!

As I now own 10 packs, I will perhaps try again. Maybe my mouth needs time to adjust? But it doesn't seem healthy to even consume this stuff given such high sodium content. Unless this is something you grew up on and it brings you a nostalgic feeling, my advice is to steer very clear of this product.
