Although the company is now owned by the Loreal Group, Shu Uemura was born in Tokyo in 1928 and became the first Japanese makeup artist in Hollywood. In 1967, Shu Uemura began to lay the foundations of his company, which later became Shu Uemura Cosmetics 15 years later with the launch of Unmask. The oil-based cleanser was a groundbreaking innovation at the time, able to spread to pores and remove impurities while enhancing skin quality, reflecting Shu’s belief that “beautiful make-up starts with beautiful skin”.
