Simple & Easy Japanese Okonomiyaki Sauce Recipe

by Ayumi Matsuo

Sauce Condiment

Okonomiyaki sauce is a thick, brown sauce that is drizzled over okonomiyaki pancakes, takoyaki, and yakisoba. It is packed with sweet, savory, and umami flavors.

If you're familiar with tonkatsu sauce, then you might be thinking that okonomiyaki sauce looks and sounds quite similar. Actually, okonomiyaki sauce is a bit sweeter and contains more umami than tonkatsu sauce. That is why it pairs perfectly with grilled Japanese street food dishes.

While there are of course many bottled options of okonomiyaki sauce sold in supermarkets and online, you can also easily make it at home and with only a few ingredients.

This time, we're going to share our simple and easy okonomiyaki sauce recipe with you. Try making this sauce and pairing it with Osaka style or Hiroshima style okonomiyaki, takoyaki, or yakisoba the next time you make them at home!

Note: since this is a freshly made sauce, please store it in an airtight container and use it within 1-2 days after preparing.
