Arrietty Cream Stew is a heartwarming dish inspired by the Studio Ghibli film The Secret World of Arrietty. The story follows Arrietty, a tiny “borrower” who lives secretly with her family, surviving by quietly taking small items from humans. In one scene, the family shares a quiet meal of cream stew and bread in their hidden home, giving the dish a cozy, comforting, and nurturing feel that you can recreate at your own table.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

The reason you’ll love this recipe is the simplicity of the cooking process, and you can recreate and experience Arrietty’s world just by serving it in a wooden bowl. In the film, you can find a scene where Arrietty is crushing biscuits into fine powder portions and placing them in a big bag. The story doesn’t explain what this is for, but I guess it might be used as a flour substitute in the cream stew and bread.

In this recipe, I’m using a cream stew roux, so we don’t need flour, but I wanted to add a little flavor twist. I’ve added some crushed biscuits to the stew. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this little twist!

Key Ingredients

Chicken Thigh - Chicken thighs are preferred for their tender texture and umami richness. They hold up well during simmering and contribute depth to the creamy broth.

Vegetables (Onion, Carrot, Potato, Spinach) - Onion adds sweetness and umami, while carrot brings vivid color. Potatoes become silky and add a rustic touch, and spinach gives melty leaves with crunchy stems.

Seasoning / Special Ingredient – Cream Stew Roux - I used House Foods, as this brand is one of the most well-known brands in Japan. Its silky-smooth texture and the rich creamy flavor must be the one that everyone will love.

Biscuits - I used whole wheat biscuits. They add a nice crunchy texture and Arrietty’s atmosphere to the dish.

Helpful Tools

Heavy-bottomed pot: Preferably, the pot should have a heavy base to distribute the heat evenly. A Dutch oven, cast-iron enameled pot, or high-conductivity pots are perfect.

Spatula: Avoiding scorch while cooking is key to creating a beautiful white-colored cream stew, so you need a spatula.

Tips to Know Before You Start

  • Avoid scorching: Avoiding scorching is crucial for a perfect Japanese cream stew. Stir ingredients over gentle heat and never let the bottom of the pot burn.
  • Stop the heat when adding the cream stew roux: The cream stew roux portions should be added once the boiling has stopped; otherwise, the texture won’t stay silky and smooth.
